Priorities

Economic Development

For many years prior leadership worked hard to keep Bedford a bedroom community. Economic stagnation led to lower sales tax revenues for the city and higher property taxes for the residents. Over the last few years we’ve changed our focus to attract new businesses to Bedford, which has resulted in record sales tax revenue. With only 2% of our land left for development, Dan has made sure we are approving quality developments that will enhance our city and bring in much needed sales tax revenue.

Looking ahead, the city has two exciting development projects (Bedford Commons, and Campus West) that will transform the city and secure our city’s financial future for decades to come.

Bedford Commons (south of Bedford Road, between E.M. Bilger Jr. Blvd. and Parkwood Blvd.) - One of the last remaining vacant land left, this development has been talked about and fought over for many years. The current vision for this project is to provide for the citizens of Bedford a unique and family-friendly place to gather, dine and enjoy the outdoors.

Campus West (205 N. Industrial Blvd.) - This project is slated to include upscale townhomes strategically placed around the perimeter of the site, as well as grocery, retail, and restaurant space. This development will also incorporate outdoor restaurant seating that overlooks about an acre of open space, meant for gatherings and small events, with paths connecting the businesses to the townhomes.

Accomplishments

  • Record sales tax revenue - Revenue has increased 35% over the last five years

  • Created the city’s first TIRZ (Tax increment Reinvestment Zone) to pay for infrastructure improvements and jumpstart development for Bedford Commons and Campus West.

  • Review and rewriting of the city's decades old master plan. This will dictate what the residents want our city to resemble as neighborhoods and shopping centers turn over.

  • Brought an out of state retailer to relocate their sales and corporate headquarters to Bedford, ensuring millions of dollars of revenue and tourism in years to come.
